Beautiful Melody: Song from a Secret Garden

What is it about gardens that have inspired so many artists, authors, poets, and musicians? Gardens are a concentration of botanical life, beautiful in their diverse collections and arrangements. They are places of refuge, contemplation and solace that allow the thinking mind to rest, the senses to indulge, and the spirit to feel at peace.

The instrumental piece, “Song from a Secret Garden,” captures that very essence of peacefulness and beauty. It was composed by Norwegian pianist, Rolf Lovland, a classically trained musician, producer, and composer. Together with Irish violinist and vocalist Fionnuala Sherry, Lovland formed the group Secret Garden. Songs from a Secret Garden was their first international album, released in 1996. It won prestigious awards and became a hit in several countries, including Norway and South Korea. The title song was the third track on the album.

The successful duo, Lovland and Sherry, has said that nature has been an inspiration, and that they “have tried to avoid being pigeonholed into particular genres of music. Our music is our own – starting with simple melodies, wanting to tell a story, mostly without words and sometimes with words. Whatever lies beyond this personal and intuitive process is not our concern and not something we think about.”
