Did you know that alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S., and that 1 in 3 senior citizens will die of this disease or another form of dementia? (source: Alzheimer’s Association)
Pretty grim, right? Well, there’s this amazing new therapy that is providing real help and relief for the sufferers of these diseases….music!
Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music and Memory, has made an incredible film called “Alive Inside.” It shows how simply putting on headphones and listening to a favorite tune can restore a person’s memory and bring them back to the present moment (many victims of dementia have lost touch with the outside world and are near-catatonic).
The effects of listening to familiar music for these patients is absolutely incredible. In fact, the film shows that music can heal and transform in ways that prescription drugs cannot. Too many people in assisted living or nursing homes are drugged up and literally wasting away. Cohen demonstrates that music can provide real relief and transformative healing.
I highly recommend this film, “Alive Inside.” It is powerfully inspiring, heart-warming and educational. We all probably know at least one person who would greatly benefit from this therapy!
