Enya’s “Caribbean Blue,” A Transformative Soundscape

As I write this article on St. Patrick’s Day, I reflect on how music has long been the heart and soul of the beautiful country of Ireland.

The nation’s long and challenging history brought forth some of the most beautiful and expressive music, from the ancient Celtic songs and harp arrangements, to the lively folk songs, to the tunes of modern-day artists like  U2, Westlife, Van Morrison, and The Cranberries.

One of my favorite Irish musicians is Enya, whose blend of Celtic, classical and ambient styles creates an atmospheric and surreal soundscape that is unique and transformative.

When I visited Ireland in the 1990s, I was captivated by the legends and folklores I heard told. There was a strong spiritual awareness and openness in the culture that fascinated me.

Some of Enya’s songs recall such legends and timeless stories, as well as create an ethereal world with lush instrumental tracks and angelic vocals.

“Caribbean Blue” is one such song whose dreamy vocals speak of Greek mythology, nature and hope. A fantasy world is created, set among the beautiful Caribbean Sea that flows with the moving waltz time and energetic tempo of the song.

Enya’s music is both elevating and soothing. One could easily waltz across a grand ballroom to “Caribbean Blue” or imagine floating in crystal-clear blue waters.

I hope you enjoy my piano arrangement of Enya’s “Caribbean Blue” and let yourself be transformed.
